Left-Wing Lawyer Who Firebombed Police Car Blames “Unprocessed Trauma” — Wants Commutation Of Sentence

Back in May of 2020, Attorney Urooj Rahman was arrested along with another attorney for throwing a Molotov cocktail at a police car.

The Daily News reported:

Two high-powered lawyers, including an Ivy League corporate attorney were charged on Sunday with hurling Molotov cocktails into a police vehicle during the New York leftist riots this weekend.

Colinford Mattis, 32, a lawyer and member of Community Board 5 in East New York, was charged along with fellow attorney Urooj Rahman with the attempted attack on an empty police cruiser parked outside the 88th Precinct station house in Fort Greene.

“This is shocking news to me,” Andre Mitchell, president of Community Board 5 told the Daily News. “The allegation does surprise me because that doesn’t sound like him.”

The super of Rahman’s building called her “an angel” who recently lost her legal job.

Both lawyers pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Urooj Rahman said she regretted her actions.

Reuters reported:

Two New York lawyers charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail at an empty city police car during protests over George Floyd’s death pleaded guilty to new charges on Thursday, part of a deal in which prosecutors recommended shorter sentences.

Urooj Rahman, 33, and Colinford Mattis, 34, had pleaded guilty last October to possessing a destructive device and expressed regret, but fought federal prosecutors’ effort to brand them as terrorists, more than doubling their potential sentences to 10 years.

…

“I wish I had made different and better choices that night,” Mattis told Cogan. Rahman also said she regretted her actions.

Rahman is now seeking a commutation of her sentence.

In a court filing, she said she was coping with “unprocessed trauma” and was “quite drunk” when she threw the cocktail at the police car.

The Washington Free Beacon reported:

A left-wing lawyer who pleaded guilty to firebombing a police cruiser is asking for a commutation of her sentence, pointing to the fact that she was inebriated at the time of the offense and coping with “unprocessed trauma,” according to court filings.

Attorneys for Urooj Rahman argue the self-described human-rights activist was “numb, disassociated, and inebriated” when she threw a Molotov cocktail into a New York City police car during the George Floyd riots in May 2020. Lawyers say Rahman was also reeling from her many “abusive partnership relationships” and processing “early trauma” from being taunted as a Muslim after 9/11.

On the night of May 29, 2020, Rahman “became quite drunk” after drinking vodka on “an empty stomach” with fellow lawyer and later getaway driver Colinford Mattis. Rahman’s attorneys say the pair’s decision to firebomb an NYPD cruiser was an “aberrational” act meant to protect others from future police violence.

Her attorneys wrote in a memo that “tossing the Molotov cocktail was a way of expressing anger at those police officers around the country for whom Black lives did not matter” and that “it was an act of protest intended to avoid exposing others to harm.”
