General elections are taking place in Brazil. The country’s current president, conservative Jair Bolsonaro, is leading the polls by a small margin against former socialist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Today Brazilians will vote for president, state and federal representatives, senator and state governor.

According to the Veritá Institute poll, the body that came closest to the outcome of the 2018 elections, President Jair Bolsonaro leads the polls by a small margin against Lula.

Bolsonaro is a conservative, against globalism, fights against abortion, gender ideology, and is in favor of market economy and civilian armament. His government has been notable in recent months for its success in reducing inflation and fuel prices.

President Donald Trump sent a video to Bolsonaro yesterday. The 45th president asked for votes for the Brazilian President and expressed his respect for Brazilians.

– Obrigado, meu amigo Trump!

Lula da Silva was president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010. His government was marked by allegations of systemic corruption, money laundering schemes, and economic crisis, especially left by his successor, Dilma Rousseff, from the same party as Lula, who was deposed in 2016.

The leftist was arrested in 2018 for corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets. In November 2019, Supreme Court judges ordered Lula’s release and his political rights restored so that he could participate in the elections again.

Lula’s vice-presidential candidate is Geraldo Alckmin, who in past elections passed himself off as Lula da Silva’s opponent, having contested the election against the leftist in 2006.

Bolsonaro has promised, if re-elected, to expand his government’s economic reforms and expand access to guns for civilians. “Every gun control policy is a step towards implementing a dictatorship. I’m not a dictator, I’m not afraid of the people,” said the president when defending firearms for the population.
