Todd Bowles, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, spoke to the press about the Bucs upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bowles has an extensive football career by any measure. He was signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent player in 1986 and played in the league for seven years, including Washington’s Super Bowl XXII winning team.
His coaching career spans both college and the NFL and includes:
1997 Morehouse College- Defensive coordinator & secondary coach
1998-1999 Grambling State- Defensive coordinator & secondary coach
2000 New York Jets-Secondary coach
2001-2003 Cleveland Browns-Secondary–nickel package coach
2004 Cleveland Browns-Secondary coach
2005–2007 Dallas Cowboys-Secondary coach
2008-2011 Miami Dolphins-Assistant head coach & secondary coach
2011 Miami Dolphins- Interim head coach & secondary coach
2012 Philadelphia Eagles-Secondary coach
2012 Philadelphia Eagles-Interim defensive coordinator & secondary coach
2013-2014 Arizona Cardinals-Defensive coordinator
2015-2018 New York Jets-Head Coach
2019-2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Defensive coordinator
2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Head Coach
But woke reporters wanted to talk about race.
Bowles was asked about his relationship with Steelers coach Tomlin and being one of four Black head coaches in the NFL, “You and Mike Tomlin are two of the few Black head coaches in the league. I wonder what your relationship is like with him.”
Bowles responded to the woke question perfectly. “I have a very good relationship with Tomlin. We don’t look at what color we are when we coach against each other. We just know each other. I have a lot of very good white friends that coach in this league as well. I don’t think it’s a big deal as far as us coaching against each other. I think it’s normal.”
Bowles added, “We coach ball. We don’t look at color.”
Helpful white ESPN reporter Jenna Laine race-splained to Bowles about the significance of his race saying, “But you also understand that representation matters too, right? And that when aspiring coaches or even football players they see you guys, you know they see someone who looks like them, that grew up like them, that has to mean something.”
The exasperation on Bowles face during the lecture on race said everything and Bowles’ response was fire. “Well, when you say ‘see you guys’ and look like them and grew up like them, means that we are oddballs to begin with. And I think the minute you guys stop making a big deal about it, everybody else will.”
Ouch.
Clay Travis nailed it on Twitter.
Todd Bowles didn’t get the woke memo on NFL racism. Listen to the questions he gets from left wing reporters and his responses. pic.twitter.com/PCjTpbXlF9

A white woman at ESPN telling a black NFL head coach why his race matters is a perfect distillation of the broken sports media culture ESPN has created. It’s all left wing identity politics and cancel culture there. Good for Todd Bowles for his answer.

Others weighed in on Twitter praising the coach for his responses.
FBT sees you, Coach Bowles!
Perhaps the self-reliance, action-orientation, work ethic, hard work, and discipline it takes to be in the NFL is not compatible with the woke mindset.

The fact that this self-respecting black man doesn’t want to be token representation and doesn’t want to be seen as a “black” coach but just a coach seems to break racist liberals brains.
Making everything about race is racist, imo. https://t.co/QwEMIJ3RX0

The woke-fest appears in the below press conference at the 7:36 mark.
