Elon Musk to ‘Do Away With’ Permanent Bans on Twitter Users, According to Report

Elon Musk to ‘Do Away With’ Permanent Bans on Twitter Users, According to Report

Elon Musk is set to reinstate all permanent Twitter bans, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The newspaper also reported that Musk is set to take over as CEO of the company, at least in the short term.

Bloomberg cited an anonymous source for their reporting.

“Musk also intends to do away with permanent bans on users because he doesn’t believe in lifelong prohibitions, the person said. That means people previously booted off the platform may be allowed to return, though it was unclear if that included former president Donald Trump, the person said,” according to the Bloomberg report.

On Thursday, Musk fired chief executive Parag Agrawal, chief financial officer Ned Segal and Vijaya Gadde, head of legal policy, trust, and safety.

Gadde “played a key role in the contentious decisions to ban Donald Trump and suppress news articles about Hunter Biden’s laptop,” according to a report from the Daily Mail earlier this year.

Musk also brought in Tesla engineers to review the platform’s code.

Bloomberg reports, “Twitter’s engineers can no longer make changes to code as of noon in San Francisco, the people said. That’s part of an effort to ensure that nothing about the product changes ahead of the deal closing, said the people, who declined to be named because the process isn’t public. Twitter enacted a similar freeze when the deal was first announced in April.”

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” Musk wrote in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday. “There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society.”

“In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost,” Musk continued. “That is why I bought Twitter. I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love. And I do so with humility, recognizing that failure in pursuing this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility.”

The billionaire added, “Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!”
