Democrat Rep. Donald McEachin passed away on Monday.
McEachin had colorectal cancer – he was 61.
Conservative Brief reported:
Virginia Democratic Rep. Donald McEachin passed away on Monday at the age of 61 following his battle with colorectal cancer. McEachin, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, was re-elected earlier this month in the midterm elections to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Tara Rountree, the congressman’s chief of staff, released a statement announcing the tragic news: “We are all devastated at the passing of our boss and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin. Valiantly, for years now, we have watched him fight and triumph over the secondary effects of his colorectal cancer from 2013. Tonight, he lost that battle, and the people of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District lost a hero who always, always fought for them and put them first.”
“Until a new representative is elected, our office will remain open and continue to serve our constituents. The family asks for privacy at this time. Arrangements will be announced over the next few days,” the statement continued.
McEachin won re-election during the midterms beating Republican candidate Leon Benjamin 64.4% to 35.6%.
His district is in the Richmond area of Virginia.
Just The News reported:
McEachin, who has represented the state’s Richmond area in Congress since 2017, was reelected earlier this month by 64.4%, making him one of 213 Democrats elected to the next Congress, according to Politico.
McEachin’s death does not affect how many votes the next Speaker of the House will need.
Fox News reported:
With the death of Virginia Democratic Rep. Donald McEachin, the new Congress will begin with a vacancy until there is a special election to fill that seat.
A reminder: You cannot be appointed to the House.
McEachin’s untimely death does not give some breathing room to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., in his quest to become Speaker. The new Congress will begin with 434 members. The magic number for McCarthy continues to be 218 – an outright majority of the entire body.
Who will replace McEachin will be decided by a special election on a date decided by Governor Glenn Youngkin.
McEachin’s district is heavily Democrat.
