Greggs stores affected by IT glitch, leading to payment issues and store closures

Britain’s leading bakery chain, Greggs, has encountered technical difficulties with payments, resulting in the closure of some of its stores.

Greggs acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are currently experiencing issues accepting payments in our shops,” and assured customers that efforts were underway to resolve the matter promptly.

Reports indicate that stores in various cities, including London, Manchester, Cardiff, and Glasgow, have been impacted by card payment problems.

The IT disruptions prompted certain shops to display temporary “closed” notices, while others directed customers to place orders outside using the Greggs mobile app, with food subsequently handed over to them.

One customer shared on social media their local branch’s closure and posted a notice from the shop explaining the delay due to technical issues. Another customer noted that their Greggs outlet was only accepting cash payments.

Renowned for its assortment of meat and vegan sausage rolls, Greggs operates over 2,450 bakeries across the UK.

This incident adds to a string of technical challenges experienced by retailers. Recently, McDonald’s outlets in several countries, including the UK, Japan, and Australia, faced a “technology outage,” which the fast-food chain clarified was not due to a cyberattack.

Similarly, Sainsbury’s encountered a “technical issue” over the weekend, affecting card payments in stores and prompting the cancellation of online grocery deliveries. Sainsbury’s CEO issued an apology to customers, assuring them that affected systems had been restored.

Tesco also confronted technical difficulties, resulting in the cancellation of some home delivery orders on Saturday.
