Sen. Tim Scott Introduces Bill to Cut Federal Funding to Schools That Hide Students’ ‘Gender Identity’ From Parents

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott has introduced a bill to cut federal funding to schools that hide students’ ‘gender identity’ from parents.

The Parental Rights Over the Education and Care of Their (PROTECT) Kids Act, or “PROTECT Kids Act”, will “require elementary and middle schools that receive Federal funds to obtain parental consent before changing a minor child’s gender markers, pronouns, or preferred name on any school form, allowing a child to change the child’s sex-based accommodations, including locker rooms or bathrooms.”

The bill notes that a parent’s right to oversee the care and education of their child is guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment.

“Parents have a fundamental, constitutionally guaranteed right to raise and educate their children in the way that they choose,” the bill states. “Public schools across the country are violating these fundamental parental and familial rights by deliberately hiding information about gender transitioning children from their parents.”

The bill goes on to list violations of this right that are taking place across the country.

For example, schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, instruct teachers to form ‘‘gender transition plans’’ for students without the knowledge or consent of the student’s family.

An Iowa public school district was also sued for allowing children as young as 12 to create ‘‘gender support plans’’ without the knowledge or consent of their parents.

“Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia has required all teachers to complete a training program saying that parental permission is not required for students who seek to be addressed by different names or pronouns,” the bill points out.

The bill asserts that “regardless of their intentions, these schools are sabotaging the parent-child relationship and encouraging children to keep secrets from the adults who are charged with protecting and defending them—their parents.”

“Children do best when their parents are actively involved in their education. School districts, activist organizations, and teachers unions must never be allowed to intrude on parental rights by concealing critical information from parents about their children,” it adds.

School watchdog Parents Defending Education Action has endorsed the bill, issuing a statement saying “PDE Action proudly endorses Senator Tim Scott’s Parental Rights Over the Education and Care of Their (PROTECT) Kids Act, which aims to block federal funding to schools that conceal a child’s decision to transition sexes from his or her parents.”

“Parents have the right and responsibility to direct their child’s moral upbringing. It’s unconscionable that school officials have sought to usurp this fundamental right,” the statement continued. “PDE Action commends Senator Scott’s efforts to hold public officials accountable for undermining American families and applauds his unwavering commitment to parental rights.”
